We are back with the latest news about the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The TRKC is a free database featuring up-to-date information on European transport research activities. It enables policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to access results of EU or nationally financed transport research in the European Research Area (ERA).

NEWS

New 'Country overviews' online

The TRKC has recently updated its section on 'Country overviews' of national transport research. This section provides an overview of European and national transport research programmes and institutions across Europe. It includes individual country summaries covering each of the 27 Member States of the European Union and three other European Research Area (ERA) member countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), as well as an overview of European-level transport research programmes.

The TRKC also publishes a printed Compendium of all this national and European transport research programme information - the new edition will be available in PDF format in the 'Download' section of the website shortly.

TRKC at the Future of Transport conference

On 20 November 2009, the TRKC team participated in the Stakeholders’ Conference on the Future of Transport in Brussels.

Organised by the European Commission, this second high-level stakeholders' conference aimed to collect views on concrete measures to consider in the preparation of the new White Paper on the future of transport. It was held as a follow-up to the Communication on the Future on Transport, adopted by the Commission on 17 June 2009.

The TRKC team participated with a stand and distributed the latest policy brochures and information on European and national transport research programmes.

Speakers included Leif Zetterberg, State Secretary for Communications, Sweden and Matthias Ruete, Director General of the European Commission's DG Transport and Energy. In opening the conference, the Vice President of the Commission and Commissioner in charge of Transport Policy, Antonio Tajani, emphasised the importance of transport infrastructure to all aspects of European policy, from the single market to international trade and from the environment to EU enlargement and neighbourhood policy.

New programmes online

Support of Sustainable Transport Development Implementation

The Czech Republic faces the need to quickly modernise its transport infrastructure. The ability to calculate the benefits accurately requires the ability to express external costs. Among other things, this new programme's objectives include: the development and verification of new technical standards and means to improve road safety and reduce environmental impact, and the development of general methods and tools for quantificying social externalities for individual modes of transport. The programme is thematically linked to National Research Programs I and II, and particularly to Czech Transport Policy for the Years 2005-2013. POT - Programme for Strategic Transport Research

The Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications has the responsibility for yearly and long-range investment plans and advance planning (national transport plans). Normally government research money is channelled into programmes run by the Research Council of Norway. The Ministry had wanted to focus research on special needs tied to its own operations. Therefore a smaller programme (POT), financed directly by the Ministry, was established to finance projects which are relevant for the national planning process within the national administration and the political process. ways2go - Innovation and Technology for Evolving Mobility Needs

ways2go is the Austrian action line to develop sustainable mobility solutions in the context of challenges posed by future demographic and social changes. The program’s goal is to develop and raise awareness of innovative new technologies, systems and organisational structures designed to meet these significant challenges - with its main emphasis on passenger transport. It aims to expand the knowledge base in relation to future mobility and transport issues, and to make a vital contribution to the development of user-driven, sustainable transport systems and mobility solutions. The initiative will focus on ideas for creating inclusive and socially sustainable mobility that meets the highest possible standards for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
