Dear readers, We are back with the latest news about the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The TRKC is a free database featuring up-to-date information on European transport research activities. It enables policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to access results of EU or nationally financed transport research in the European Research Area (ERA). In this bulletin, we report on the following issues:
Enjoy
reading! NEWSTRKC publishes new Thematic Research Summary on Passenger TransportThe Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) has recently published a new Thematic Research Summary (TRS) on Passenger transport. This theme refers to all forms of the public and private transport of people, by air, land or water - whether scheduled or unscheduled, urban, rural, coastal, local, long-distance or cross-border - or involving one or more modes. This Thematic Research Summary (TRS) only deals with research relevant to the planning, organisation or operation of passenger transport modes to the exclusion of freight. Decision support tools covered in a second Thematic Research SummaryDecision support tools are concerned with methodologies and information tools for transport policy making. The tools addressed by this Thematic Research Summary are those targeted at public decision makers concerned with transport policies and projects at all geographical scales (urban, local, regional, national, supranational), such as traffic studies on equilibrium conditions between infrastructure and service supply and demand, impact studies and evaluation studies of transport policies and projects, monitoring and benchmarking of transport systems. The first part includes a brief overview of the scope of the theme and summarises the main policy developments at EU level relevant to the theme. The second part contains a synthesis of the main findings and policy implications from research projects and identifies the implications for further research. Thematic Research Summary on Land Use Planning also onlineThe land use planning tool focuses not on the transport system itself, but on the land use patterns which generate the demand for transport. The overall emphasis is usually on shaping the pattern of development and influencing the location, scale, density, design and mix of land uses in order to reduce the need to travel, reduce the length of journeys and make it easier for people to access jobs, shopping, leisure facilities and services by public transport, walking and cycling. As
always, each TRS aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of available
results from completed European EU-funded research projects related to the
theme in question. The new TRS publications are available for download
from the Thematic
publications section of the TRKC website. |
Forthcoming eventTRKC at Transport Research Arena Europe 2010Jointly organised by the European Commission, the Conference of European Directors of Roads, and the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council, the third edition of the Transport Research Arena (TRA) will take place in Brussels from 7 to 10 June 2010. The main theme of TRA 2010 will be 'Sustaining Road Transport Mobility through innovation in Europe'. The aim of this four-day event is to provide stakeholders of transport research and development with a platform to debate innovation for sustainable mobility in Europe, leading to a greener, safer and smarter transport system. TRA will demonstrate and highlight the problems and challenges facing road transport in the future, and which require a multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary system approach. The Transport Research Knowledge Centre will be present with a stand at TRA 2010.
