Dear readers, We are back with the latest news about the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The TRKC is a free database featuring up-to-date information on European transport research activities. It enables policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to access results of EU or nationally financed transport research in the European Research Area (ERA). In this bulletin, we report on the following issues:
Enjoy reading! NEWSTRKC draws interest with TRA2010 workshop on 'Accessing Transport Research Information'An audience of some 50 participants attended the workshop on "Accessing transport research information" organised by the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) at the Transport Research Arena 2010 on Wednesday 9 June. Four databases - TRKC, ELTIS, Press4Transport and ENTrada - presented themselves, as well as the forthcoming database on transport research programming from the ERA-Net initiative. Following a lively debate that overan the session's scheduled time-slot, the workshop concluded that the main problem is the scattered landscape of numerous transport research databases and portals. This should be tackled, as the major barrier facing all databases is the difficulty in finding and accessing information sources, as well as the question of trustworthiness of the sources. 3 new Thematic Research Summaries published on TRKCThe Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) has published three new Thematic Research Summaries (TRS). The first, on Rail Transport, aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of results of completed European research projects related to that theme. This is done separately for three sub-themes that are important in rail-related research: 'Development, planning and organisation of rail services in Europe', 'Rail management systems' and 'Development of rail technology'. A second publication updates the TRS on Freight Transport. It addresses the movement of all kinds of goods from raw materials to finished goods and waste products. Freight Transport makes use of local, regional, national and international transport systems and is increasingly adopting intermodal and multimodal solutions. It is also concerned with the organisation and management of the supply chain and logistics activities. The updated 'Thematic Research Summary on Freight Transport' aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of results of completed European research projects related to this theme. Finally, a new updated TRS on Waterborne Transport starts from the observation that there is a growing imbalance between modes of transport in the European Union. The growing success of road and air transport is resulting in worsening congestion, which could be helped by a greater focus on Waterborne Transport. This updated paper provides a structured guide to the results of research and technical development projects relating to Waterborne Transport, carried out in transport research programmes throughout the European Research Area. The 3 new Thematic Research Summaries can be downloaded from the Thematic Publications section of the TRKC website. |
