Dear readers, We are back with the latest news about the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The TRKC is a free database featuring up-to-date information on European transport research activities. It enables policy makers, researchers and other stakeholders to access results of EU or nationally financed transport research in the European Research Area (ERA). In this bulletin, we report on the following issues:

reading! NEWSTRKC publishes new Thematic Research Summary on 'Equity and accessibility'The Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) has published one new and two updated papers in its series of Thematic Research Summaries (TRS). Each publication aims to provide a synthesis of research results and policy implications from completed projects. The first part of the TRS includes a brief analysis of the scope of the theme, and a policy review where the main policy developments at EU level are summarised. The TRKC's new Thematic Research Summary focuses on 'Equity and accessibility'. When considering the impacts of transport strategies, equity is concerned with ensuring they are reasonably equally distributed, or are focused particularly on those with special needs. Accessibility can be defined as “ease of reaching”, and is concerned with increasing the ability with which people in different locations, and with differing availability of transport, can reach different types of facility. Updated TRS on 'Safety and security'The TRS on 'Safety and security' has been updated for 2010. It aims to provide a synthesis of research results and policy implications from completed projects. The safety and security theme deals with aspects such as the level of danger that is socially acceptable, as well as systems, rules and procedures for improving safety. New, updated version of the Thematic Research Summary on 'Efficiency in sustainable mobility'In addition, a new version of the Thematic Research Summary on 'Efficiency in sustainable mobility', also updated for 2010, is now available from the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The paper deals with the minimisation of the resource costs of a given transport system and the maximisation of its performance. The three new and udated TRSs - on 'Safety and security', 'Equity and accessibility' and 'Efficiency in sustainable mobility' - are now available for download from the Thematic publications section of the TRKC website. |
New funding programmes and technology platforms published on TRKCThe Waterborne transport Technology PlatformThe European Union Transport Policy goals of "efficient accessible and competitive transport systems which are essential to growth, employment and EU competitiveness" and "a high level of safety and environmental protection" call for an invigorated, structured cluster approach in the maritime industry, notably in the field of innovation, research and development. To this end, main stakeholders from within the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF) decided to establish a platform for continuous dialogue between all stakeholders (including the EU and national government institutions), which is now called WATERBORNE TP (Technology Platform). Its aim is to establish consensus on future research directions and support mobilisation of the necessary financial resources.
