This Thematic Research Summary on Air Transport aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of results of completed European research projects and summarises the main relevant policy developments at EU level.

The first part includes a brief overview of the scope of the theme and summarises the relevant main policy developments at EU level. The second part contains a synthesis of the main findings and policy implications from research projects in this area, and identifies the implications for further research. This is done separately for seven sub-themes identified in the aeronautics and air transport related research reported in this summary.

A new Thematic Research Summary (TRS) on Environmental Aspects, updated for 2010, is now available from the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). This Thematic Research Summary aims to provide the reader with a synthesis of results of completed European and national research projects related to that theme.

The updated TRS on Environmental Aspects is now available for download from the Thematic publications section of the TRKC website.

The TRKC has published a new Policy Brochure on River Information Services. These concise studies help you to discover how transport research is contributing to policy-making and transport operations, illustrated by examples of particular achievements.

The new brochure focuses on information services for inland navigation, known in Europe as River Information Services (RIS). River Information Services are defined as a concept of harmonised information services to support traffic and transport management in inland navigation, including interfaces to other modes of transport.

22 Sep 2010: 

The Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) has published a new, updated version of its Thematic Research Summary on Transport Management. This theme covers the management of traffic and transport services for all modes, including changing the way in which existing transport systems are used (particularly with respect to infrastructure) and the strategic and tactical control of traffic.

The updated TRS on Transport Management is now available for download from the Thematic publications section of the TRKC website.

10 Sep 2010: 

The paper is a major update of the Thematic Research Summary (TRS) on Safety and Security. It aims to provide a synthesis of research results and policy implications from completed projects. The first part of the paper includes a brief analysis of the scope of the theme, and a policy review where the main policy developments at EU level are summarised.

The Safety and Security theme deals with aspects such as the level of danger that is socially acceptable in a real-life situation, as well as systems, rules and procedures aimed at preventing, discouraging and detecting negligent, irresponsible or malicious human acts which threaten safety. The paper also considers systems and procedures to prevent, detect or mitigate mechanical or technological failures or natural phenomena which could threaten safety and security, as well as systems and procedures to protect people (transport users, transport personnel and third parties) as well as goods, infrastructure and vehicles from harm.

8 Sep 2010: 

A new version of the Thematic Research Summary (TRS) on Efficiency in Sustainable Mobility, updated for 2010, is now available from the Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC). The paper deals with the minimisation of the resource costs of a given transport system and the maximisation of its performance. Costs considered include those borne by the transport users and those by the transport operators. The relief of congestion and reliability is a significant element in the consideration of efficiency.

The updated TRS on Efficiency in Sustainable Transport is now available for download from the Thematic publications section of the TRKC website.

The Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC) has published a new Thematic Research Summary (TRS) on Equity and Accessibility.

When considering the impacts of transport strategies, equity is concerned with ensuring they are reasonably equally distributed, or are focused particularly on those with special needs. Accessibility can be defined as “ease of reaching”, and is concerned with increasing the ability with which people in different locations, and with differing availability of transport, can reach different types of facility. This paper includes a brief overview of the scope of the theme and summarises the main policy developments at EU level relevant to the theme. It also contains a synthesis of policy implications.
